Bits, Bobs

We've started family read-alouds again. Mr. O read the previous two books: Johnny Tremain and (I don't remember). Now it's my turn again, and I've realized how selfish I am. I like to do the reading, and I don't want to share. I'd like to think it's because it's something my mom did for us and I'm just keeping the tradition, and not that I'm horrible at listening. Since the kids are getting older, we're reading something a little more discussion oriented.

After a short family study time, we say goodnight to Ellie (who sometimes falls asleep before we make it this far), tuck her in, and the older kids grab something quiet to do while I read to them.

We're reading Fahrenheit 451, and I'm doing a little editing on-the-fly, ahem. It's interesting to hear their questions as the story unfolds.

Our next read aloud is Just David - vastly different books, I know.

Tonight we are pushing out the furniture, filling up the air mattresses, and breaking out the popcorn, pizza and root beer for movie night. Sometimes we have fun in this family.

What are you doing to connect with family this weekend?

P.S. All photos by Spielberg

P.P.S. Easy, peasy valentines (and so cute!)

I love family movie night! I'm not sure what we're doing, but maybe we'll come over and listen to you read. ;)

We are going to visit the grandparents this weekend. Monday we will be decorating valentine sugar cookies as a family.

Actually the valentines, though adorable, are not so easy-peasy if you are doing them for 4 kids and go a little nuts on the Photoshopping (cutting the kids away from the background and adding clipart) and can't find Tootsie Roll Pops to buy and have to make a trip to get the photos printed. And then there will be all the little slices to make and lollipops to insert.

I'm sure it's going to be worth it. I ran out of time last year and was determined to give it a go this year.

P.S. I'm totally counting the Photoshopping, sucker-searching, and photo-printing as family-connecting time. :)

There is some editing to do, huh? Not tons.
I love the image of the wife perpetually plugged into her ipod :D

Last night we had a Valentine's candlelight family dinner together. We ate too much, drank lots of sparkling grape juice, and just sat at the table in the candlelight for the longest time, talking and laughing together. It was WONDERFUL! Hope you have a happy Valentine's Day! ♥

What a great idea! My mom always read to us on road trips and I have such fond memories of it.

I do love Speilberg's photos.

You do have fun!

I'm with you about reading the stories. It's one of those precious times I feel actively good, the proper sort of mother. Mid has gotten so she'd rather listen to the radio - but Young will happily do his chores as long as I'm willing to read. We're working our way through the Little House books - he wishes he could live in those days.
