Talkin' Dirt
Someone asked me about the dirt in our Square Foot garden. The soil is something we'll definitely be changing/amending. The compost we purchased was not as great as we were told. But the veggies did turn out better than any of our previous attempts.
We will be moving the garden boxes in the spring, or depending on the weather, this fall. We will shorten the 3 boxes on the left to be only 2 feet wide instead of 3 so that we'll have enough room to walk in between them (and hop over them). The very best thing we did was to add a drip line for watering - in fact, I've only had a few tomatoes with split skins this year.
This was also our first time growing the tomatoes on a trellis
Zucchini - the plant that keeps on giving and giving and giving...
We'll be adding some sawdust or Perlite to the soil in order to make it less likely to compact with all the watering. I'd like to add some organic matter after we rip out all the dead stuff in a month so that it can be seeping into the soil all winter.
Next year is the year of the potato. This has been the year of the tomato as I'm still up to my eyeballs in them and am busy with attempting to can salsa and spaghetti sauce.
